Discover Wangdue Phodrang & Punakha: Fortresses, Valleys and Hidden Experiences

Explore two of Bhutan's historic valleys and the remarkable destinations surrounding Wangdue Eco Lodge.

A Journey Through the Heart of Bhutan

The journey from Thimphu to Wangdue Phodrang is one of Bhutan's most scenic drives. Leaving the capital behind, the road winds through pine forests towards Dochula Pass, where 108 chortens stand against a magnificent Himalayan backdrop. On a clear day, the snow-capped peaks stretch across the northern horizon.

Beyond Dochula, the road descends through the lush forests of Lamperi, home to the Royal Botanical Park and its remarkable collection of rhododendrons. Gradually, the cool mountain air gives way to the warmer valleys of Wangdue Phodrang and Punakha, where terraced fields, traditional villages and winding rivers reveal another side of Bhutan.

Nestled on a peaceful hillside overlooking these historic valleys, Wangdue Eco Lodge offers a place to pause, unwind and discover the surrounding region at your own pace.

Wangdue Phodrang Dzong: A Fortress Across the Valley

One of the most memorable sights at Wangdue Eco Lodge is the magnificent Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, standing directly across the valley.

Founded in 1638 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the fortress occupies a commanding ridge between the Punatsangchhu and Dangchhu rivers. For centuries, it has served as an important centre of religious and administrative life in Bhutan.

Following a devastating fire in June 2012, the historic fortress underwent an extensive reconstruction, preserving its traditional architectural character and cultural significance.

From the comfort of your room at Wangdue Eco Lodge, the fortress becomes part of the landscape of your stay. Watch the morning sunlight illuminate its whitewashed walls, admire its commanding presence during the day and enjoy the spectacular sight of the dzong glowing against the evening sky.

Rinchen Gang: A Village of Master Craftsmen

Approximately 20 minutes from Wangdue Eco Lodge lies Rinchen Gang, one of the region's most historically significant villages.

Perched on a hillside opposite Wangdue Dzong, the village is renowned for its closely clustered traditional houses and its association with the master masons who helped construct Bhutan's historic fortresses.

Today, the village is entering a new chapter through the Drinchengang Regenerative Village project, initiated under the vision of His Majesty The King. The project seeks to preserve the village's architectural heritage while improving livelihoods and creating a sustainable future for its community.

A visit offers an opportunity to appreciate the craftsmanship, traditional architecture and living cultural heritage of rural Bhutan. As the regeneration project progresses, visitors can witness the transformation of this remarkable historic settlement.

Ngashigeykha: Discover the Village Below the Lodge

Overlooking the peaceful settlement of Ngashigeykha, Wangdue Eco Lodge enjoys a close connection with the surrounding community.

According to local oral tradition, the village has historical ties to Wangdue Dzong, including families who settled here to supply water to officials at the fortress.

Today, its traditional homes, rice fields and quiet village paths offer a glimpse into the rhythms of rural Bhutanese life.

Take a leisurely walk through the village, observe seasonal agricultural activities and discover a way of life closely connected to the land. Beyond the fields, the Punatsangchhu River winds through the valley, creating a beautiful natural setting.

For travellers seeking meaningful local experiences, Ngashigeykha offers something that cannot be found in the usual sightseeing itinerary: an opportunity to discover the everyday life of a Bhutanese village.

Neysergang Monastery: A Walk Above the Valley

For guests who enjoy walking, the nearby Neysergang Monastery offers a rewarding excursion into the hills above Wangdue Eco Lodge.

The approximately 30-minute uphill walk leads to a peaceful setting with sweeping views across the Punatsangchhu River, Wangdue and the neighbouring Punakha Valley. From this elevated vantage point, the small town of Bajo and the surrounding countryside unfold below.

We particularly recommend this walk in the late afternoon, when the changing light brings out the beauty of the landscape.

As evening approaches, Wangdue Phodrang Dzong begins to glow with illumination, creating a memorable view of the historic fortress against the darkening valley.

It is a wonderful way to end the day before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Punakha Dzong: The Palace of Great Happiness

Approximately 40 minutes from Wangdue Eco Lodge lies Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan's most celebrated architectural and spiritual landmarks.

Standing gracefully at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, the magnificent fortress served as the seat of Bhutan's government before the capital moved to Thimphu in 1955. Punakha remains the winter residence of Bhutan's Central Monastic Body.

Its sacred halls have witnessed some of the most significant moments in Bhutanese history, including the royal wedding of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Her Majesty Queen Jetsun Pema on 13 October 2011.

The fortress's magnificent courtyards, intricate woodwork and riverside setting make it an unforgettable destination.

From Wangdue Eco Lodge, Punakha can be explored at leisure. Spend the day visiting the historic dzong, nearby monasteries and other cultural landmarks before returning to the tranquillity of the lodge.

Phobjikha Valley: The Winter Home of the Black-Necked Cranes

For those wishing to venture further into Bhutan's Himalayan landscapes, Phobjikha Valley is a remarkable day excursion from Wangdue Eco Lodge.

Approximately one and a half hours away, this beautiful glacial valley is surrounded by forested hills, traditional villages and expansive alpine meadows.

Phobjikha is particularly renowned as the winter home of the endangered black-necked cranes, which migrate from their breeding grounds on the Tibetan Plateau. They generally begin arriving in November and remain until around March, when they return north.

Beyond its remarkable wildlife, the valley offers peaceful walking trails, traditional rural settlements and the historic Gangtey Monastery.

Whether visiting during the crane season or enjoying the green landscapes of warmer months, Phobjikha offers a striking contrast to the warmer river valleys of Wangdue and Punakha.
